AFCON U17 offers one of the clearest early looks at Africa’s next generation. Get a head start with our “Ones to Watch” list.
From May 13 – June 2, 2026, the U17 Africa Cup of Nations will bring some of Africa’s top youth prospects into a high-pressure national team environment in Morocco.
For scouts, the tournament has long been one of the most important early reference points in African youth football.
But the best scouts don’t treat AFCON U17 as a one-off viewing event. They track players before the tournament, test those evaluations under pressure, then continue following the player long after the tournament ends.
To get ahead of the tournament, we’ve compiled four AFCON U17 prospects set to make a splash in Morocco this year.
With Oliver Dehnhardt, Head of Football Strategy at Eyeball.
Sega Fall is no new name for scouts who follow African football regularly. He has already been a decisive factor at senior level for Generation Foot, the talent factory that has produced so many top-level players.
Fall can play both as a winger and striker. He is very strong in 1v1 situations, makes good runs in behind, and as a striker, his movement inside the box is precise and dangerous. Definitely one to watch in Morocco.
Eric Bolo is probably the profile we are most looking forward to watching at this AFCON.
He is a dominant center-back profile, exceptional in duels, highly athletic, and already looks like a very complete player. We would not be surprised if his name is one of the most talked about after the tournament.
Aboubacar Maiga needs little introduction. The agile attacking midfielder from Africa Foot is a player we at Eyeball have already mentioned several times. It feels like Mali produces this type of agile number 10 every AFCON cycle, and this year it is Maiga.
He recently played in a tournament for Paris Saint-Germain, and FC Barcelona have also been mentioned due to their partnership with Africa Foot. We understand why. This is a player with very high potential.
Songi Glao stood out during our research process and kept performing every time we watched him. He has explosive speed, is very direct in 1v1 situations, and is a powerful finisher. What we especially like is that he does not overcomplicate his game. He plays simply and effectively.
Already playing senior football for Zoman, it looks like they have a gem on their hands. It will be interesting to see how he is used tactically, as he can contribute effectively in both attacking and defensive roles.
For scouts with recruiting aspirations in Africa, 17 is a critical age group.
Due to transfer regulations, African players cannot move internationally before 18. Many AFCON participants are now just one year away from becoming eligible for those moves.
This is often when long-term relationship building begins.
The work before 18 is about tracking development, building trust with families and representatives, and preparing for the moment when a move becomes possible.
The best way to scout AFCON U17 is to treat it like a place to validate players you’re already watching.
Before the tournament, scouts should identify prospects and create a watchlist. During AFCON, those evaluations are tested in competition. Afterwards, the work continues once the hype fades and players return to their normal development environments.
Here’s how to scout AFCON U17:
Tournaments like AFCON may reveal talent, but that view is not the full picture. Scouts should know what the player looks like in his usual environment before the first AFCON match.
Without club context, it becomes harder to separate real traits from system effects, weaker opposition, or highlight-driven bias.
AFCON should act as the pressure test for what you saw beforehand. Scouts should compare tournament performance against the pre-tournament baseline.
The strongest prospects reveal themselves through repeat actions. One goal, one assist, or one viral clip can distort evaluation. Pre-scouting sharpens the focus during AFCON.
AFCON U17 creates moments. But scouting assessment continues after players return to their clubs. Scouts should closely track changes in roles, physical development, minutes played, and consistency across months.
Post-tournament evaluation helps you avoid overrating a player based on a short tournament spike. It also helps scouts avoid missing players who showed strong traits without producing headline numbers.
It’s an especially important consideration at U17, where players develop unevenly.
Without consistent club footage and long-term tracking, tournament evaluation can become isolated from a player’s real development path.
Eyeball helps scouts connect those environments.
With extensive coverage of African youth academies, leagues, and tournaments, scouts can evaluate players before AFCON U17, pressure test those evaluations during the tournament, then continue tracking development long after the competition ends.
The result is a longer-term view of the player — not just a tournament snapshot.
